LIIAR Analysis of your Front Cover Page and How you Achieved it.
Language:
The masthead on my magazine is over the top of the main photograph. This is showing that this is a new magazine and that it isn't established as well as something like 'Vogue' or 'Elle'. The main photograph is really punchy and powerful, this is shown through the use of the model's arms being crossed. The look on his face makes him look like he is powerful and determine, which makes the issue of the magazine look powerful too. The blue theme of the magazine connotates Wyke and masculinity, but the sketchiness of the splash makes the magazine more feminine and magazines are associated with females anyway so this is a very unisex magazine. I made the colours blue especially so that the magazine would be very college orientated. The coverlines are slanted so that the magazine is edgy and new. This will give the magazine a more modern and fresh feel to it and bring a new kind of feel to reading a magazine. The model is front facing and his body language is very engaging to the reader which will make then feel involved and included.
Ideology:
The photograph I have chosen is very engaging and powerful. It is a sportsman who is quite buff and big. He has hair that is very in style and a lot of boys are very sport orientated. This gives the feel of a perfect boy. This is symbolic on the front of the magazine because it gives the audience of the magazine someone to look up to and idolise. I think the fact that this issue is about sport makes the magazine feel more including and equalising with the people that are more academic and with the people that are more sporty. Because of the confidence and power in the facial expression of the model I think this gives the viewer more determination to put more confidence and power into their life and work because of the inspiration of this magazine.
Institution:
This magazine was created and published by me.
Audience:
I think this magazine front cover is going to be read by predominantly a male magazine. I think this because sport and blue are usually associated with boys and masculinity. I did this because I don't think many boys would read a magazine as they are seen to be feminine. Because this is about sport and it is blue and quite square, I think this is more aimed at men which would make them more included in the craze of magazines. I think this magazine is still aimed at females too though. I think the script type style is feminine and also the model is a boy which would also draw in female attention I think.
Representation:
The front cover has been presented in a very different and unique way, this is shown by the slanted cover lines. I think that this gives the magazine a more modern feel to it. I also think the generations now are getting more and more modern and things like magazines aren't following in this trend. I think that magazines have to keep up to date and get more modern to keep up with the new generations I think this magazine does that. The slanted cover lines and the way there is writing inside the masthead makes this magazine seem so much more modern. I think it stands for equality and the inclusion of all people male, female, academic, sporty all of them, I think this magazine includes all. I think the magazine is represented as a very friendly and welcoming magazine. I think this because of the sans-serif text. It is more laid back and comfortable with the audience. This represents college life I think because it is a lot more laid back then school, it is more mature and more responsibility I think is shown in the front cover.
How I achieved it:
At first I looked at different magazine front covers and saw what the different conventions are of a magazine such as the masthead, the splash, the main cover lines, the cover lines, the main photography etc. I learnt that the magazine photograph is usually a medium close up and I analysed 3 different front covers. This gave me an idea of what I could put on my front cover. I then looked at what I could base my magazine cover on and what the subject of the magazine should be. I decided on what I should do then I thought of different names and different type styles that I could use to achieve the feel that I wanted. After that I started taking some pictures. I thought of the costume, the setting, the positioning of the model and what I would like the model to represent and stand for in the picture. I then got it onto photoshop and twerked it, making it the right size, and tried different colours and different orientations of the text. I had two final front covers to choose from one with straight cover lines and one with slanted ones. I chose the slanted one because of how modern it looks and I liked it more.
Draft of the Contents Page.
With the draft of my contents page I wanted it to still reflect what the front cover does. I wanted the sport theme to still apply. I wanted it to look different and to look more interesting than other contents pages. I want the reader to be engaged by it and for it to not just have a lot of words an numbers on it, for it to show pictures of what the articles are like also. I want it be new and fresh just like Wyke.
The blue squares are where the photographs would be going.
The blue squares are where the photographs would be going.
Photographs Taken.
I took many picture that were medium close ups. I made Adam do many different positions and facial expressions for me. I also though I would try and use props to reinforce the sport theme. I chose the one I did because I thought this gave a positive and powerful meaning to the magazine front cover.
Digital Mock-up of Front Cover.
I think this is a good digital mock up for my front cover. Looking at this you can tell that my photograph with be a medium close up with a man folding their arms. I would like a serious expression on his face to show that he is determine and that he is very confident. I want him to be wearing some sort of sport kit so that people will understand that it is sport related. But I would like some of the writing and the cover lines to be more feminine to show that this magazine issue is not just for men.
I would like the main cover line on a slate. I think this will give it a bit of an edge and make I stand out more in people's minds. It is new, modern and freash which I think will represent what life in Wyke is.
Magazine Name and Type Style.
With the type style of my magazine masthead I want it to be something that really sticks out and is eyecatching to the audience. I want something bold and bright that people will immediately recognise if they happen to be walking by. I want it both curvy and rigid so that it is clearly aimed to and suites for both male and female target markets.
With the name I would like it to be very memorable. I want it to stick out in someone's mind and be short, punchy and quick so that it has a snappy kick to it. I want the name to relate not just to the subject of the magazine that week but to the student life as a whole. I would like to be able to change the colour of the masthead to connotate the theme of the magazine that week. For instance the front cover that I have designed the masthead is blue (the same blue as on the Wyke polo shirt) to connotate sport and masculinity to promote males reading the magazine as well as females.
I could so many subjects in my magazine but I would like to do a front cover to do with sport or photography. I would like this to be the theme of my magazine but only for that week so I want the name to be something very general. Ideas for this could include 'college life', 'speak!' Or 'student voice' for example. I think these would be good general names for my magazine and this would generalise the college life and give the reader little bursts of topics within college life with every issue.
I would like the name of the magazine to be in capitals, this is because I have chosen the name 'SPEAK!' so this connotates shouting and speech.
Mood boards and Influences.
I would like a medium close up of a footballer or a man to do with sport. inside college and with a Wyke polo on. I want his face to be determine but I will try out a lot of different positions and facial expressions.

LIIAR Analysis of 3 Magazine Front Covers.
MARIE CLAIRE
Language:
Institution
Marie Clare magazine is published in 3 countries, Groupe Marie Claire (France), Hearst Corporation(U.S.) and IPC media (UK).
Ideology
This magazine is very red and feminine. This makes me think that it is a very dominant and powerful magazine. I think it is trying to sell you the equality between men and women in the world which I see because of the attitude that the lady on the cover has towards the camera. She is holding her jacket and is tilted to the side, this is associated with being sassy and having attitude. Also I think the magazine is trying to portray women as idealistic, this is because I think the woman on this front cover is the type of person that women would look up to. She is skinny, she has a perfect completion and she is overall perfect.
Audience
I think this magazine is aimed at women in their 20s to 40s. I think this because it is quite a young magazine look with the red and the leather jacket, but also mature because they need to handle money well which I got from the "127 finds you'll love for under $100". Also the "shorter, faster work out" makes me think it's for women around this age as this is the age when you would want to start keeping in shape, looking good and getting fit and healthy.
Representation
I think this magazine has been presented in a very friendly way. This I think because of the script handwriting. Script handwriting gives a very welcoming and friendly feel to it because it's like someone has actually written it, so we can connect with it more. Also the red on the magazine also makes me think that this magazine is very original and will stay around for a while, as red is a primary colour which represents that it will always be here and that it is very trustworthy. This magazine stands for women and their sneakiness and slyness. It stands for all the mysteries and stories that come with them, I can tell this by just looking at the colours and the typography, this is a women's magazine.

GQ
Language
This magazine is presented in a totally different way to the first one. This masthead is placed to the side unlike the previous one. Also the main photograph is overlapping the masthead which means this is a really well known magazine. The main photography says a lot different then the other. For a start the way he is positioned, front facing, direct to the camera, says that he is a well known, powerful man, and people will know who he is straight away. Also what he is wearing, it has no connection to the colours of the magazine, it is sleek and stylish and is backing up the main cover line, which is telling you that 'Ryan Gosling shows you how to dress like a movie star'. This will draw many people because all magazines claim that they've got the exclusive stories. The splash on this magazine actually coordinates with the colour scheme of the magazine, but yet it still stands out because there is not much of the accent colour red in there. The main cover line is nearly the biggest writing on the page, it is that big so that people will see his name and get drawn to the magazine immediately.
Institution
GQ is actually published by itself. This must mean that is mass produced world wide for it to be it's own publisher.
Ideology
I think this magazine is trying to sell you on how perfect Ryan Gosling is. The main picture is him, stood there, all modest and the main cover line is advertising the article where he can tell you how to dress. They are clearly trying to sell him as a role model for guys. Also I think this magazine is trying to say that it is new and fresh and young, I think this because of the 'Chow Down'. This is very young, hip, and cool which makes me think that they are trying to give you that impression. As well as that I think they are promoting men magazines with this issue. Not many men will read a magazine and I think GQ are trying to promote that reading a magazine if you're a man really isn't that bad and maybe even that Ryan Gosling does it so why can't you?
Audience
I think this magazine is targeted to men in their 20s to late 40s. These are the men that will know who Ryan Gosling is and what he does. Also these are the men that will want to try and look their best all of the time, which is why they would read this magazine because it has fashion tips in it. But as well as men buying it I also think some women would buy it. Just simply because Ryan Gosling is on the front of it.
Representation
I think this magazine front cover stands for simplicity and perfection in people and design. I think it will make people feel some sort of superiority and connection with Ryan Gosling as when they read it he will look like he is looking at them. It really engages the audience and I think this is what I think it stands for, men feeling included and accepted in reading magazines just as women do. I also think that this magazine expresses simplicity because it is really well thought out and designed so that it looks really tidy and neat.
College
Language
This is a very busy and fussy magazine. I think this portrays the like of a student at a first glance. The main picture is totally different to the other two, this one is more innocent looking and shy. I think this because the lady in the photograph has her hair with her forehead slightly tilted towards the camera and her shoulders up a bit. I think this gives the idea that although you're at college (university) and you're growing up really fast, you are still young and vulnerable. The picture of the girl is over the masthead which could mean that it is a very well known magazine through the US. there are a lot of cover lines which is expected as it is a college magazine and there will have been a lot going on since the last issue. There is a very neutral and natural feel to the magazine which I see through the colour scheme of yellow and blue. There isn't a splash on this magazine which is surprising because that is a convention of one so I think this says that it is new and fresh.
Institution
Ideology
I think this magazine is trying to sell to you that college life is really perfect. I think this because it is saying to the audience that if you are a college student you will be able to see famous basketball players, get all the attention from the opposite sex, be a model, be famous and things like this. I think that it is saying that it is the perfect life and they're trying to make you choose their college. It's trying to say to you that you can be yourself and be accepted and get all of these things. I think this because of the neutral colours that are on the front cover.
Audience
I think this magazine is aimed at females of the college, I think this because of the cover lines of the magazine. They all very female orientated and to do with fashion or style and things that women tend to be interested more then men. But they neutral colour scheme makes me think that is more situated towards a unisex route, as neutral is not a sexist colour scheme.
Representation
I think this magazine stands for the business of college life and the hectic feel of it. I think this is shown in the arrangement and composition of the cover lines which makes me feel like there is a very busy feel to the magazine. I think it stands to show you that you can still feel young in college and that all of the work and the pressure and the stress will not change the fact that you are still young and you can still have a great time being young whilst in higher education.
